The new hard-to-fake Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 currency notes will be available at bank ATMs when they start operating again from Friday, Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa said. “There are going to be some difficulties which they (people) will face but for their convenience, a number of steps have been taken by the government, there are facilities to withdraw money from ATM and exchange currency at banks, withdraw money from accounts,” he said on government withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from circulation to crack down on black money and counterfeit currency. People, he said, do understand the objective behind the move. “And I’m sure they will cooperate in dealing with the difficulties and inconvenience that they might face. New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a sudden address to the nation on Tuesday, announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes are being withdrawn from midnight. He said that such notes will become “mere paper”. Modi said this was being done to tackle the menace of black money in the country, which has sapped the economy. He also said that ATM withdrawals will be restricted to Rs 2,000 per day till November 11, when this limit may be increased slowly. The Prime Minister said that the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes can be deposited in banks and post offices, and also exchanged across the bank counter by showing government-issued ID proof. Withdrawals from bank accounts will be limited to Rs 10,000 for the first few days. Banks have also been ordered to remain shut on Wednesday, he said. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between the state government and mobile phones major Samsung for setting up a manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and senior Samsung officials. Under the agreement, Samsung would be investing Rs. 1,970 crores in the state. A manufacturing plant would be set up in Noida and the company would also be making smartphones for the ambitious free Samajwadi Smartphone Scheme, announced by the Chief Minister. The scheme would be rolled out next year after the state assembly polls, if the Samajwadi Party (SP) returns to power. Petrol price was on Saturday hiked by Rs 1.34 a litre, the fifth increase in two months, and diesel by Rs 2.37 a litre on back of spike in global rates.
